I think I would have liked to be a dog, for the day. [ Just that. It comes out a little wistful. Being an animal would mean none of the responsibility. And she likes animals. She probably would have been a very cute dog, too. ]

[Once Chekov (who is a tiny little pup with blue eyes for the day) managed to liberate himself from his room, he went out to--he told himself--find some way of feeding himself without thumbs. Somehow, that turned into chasing squirrels and birds and basically anything that moved.

But when he sees a young girl, he remembers that he is not a dog and is very hungry. Young girls, in his experience, are more likely to be kind to cute animals than other people. Based on this logic, Chekov bounds over to Ivy and yips.]

[ Ivy is supposed to stay distant, but she really, really likes cute animals and emotional attachment to puppies or kittens is less damaging than emotional attachment to humans.

So she's smiling down at the dog, crouching down and holding out a hand. ] Hello.

[candothat]

[The puppy's stumpy tail wags enough to shake his whole body. Chekov gives Ivy's hand a preliminary sniff (perhaps the curse has affected his mind a little) before... well, putting a paw on her hand for a handshake.]

[ Oh. You're adorable. The smile turns into a beam. ] You're very cute.

[candothat]

[That's much less offensive when one is a puppy and not a respectable officer of Starfleet.

He turns in a circle before looking up at her imploringly, head tilted.]

[archivy]

Did you want anything?

[candothat]

[Oh dear. Chekov has never been good at pantomime, even as a human. He whimpers and picks up a nearby stick, gnawing at it. That conveys hunger, right? How do normal dogs ask for food?]

[archivy]

[ Thinking for a moment. ] Either you want to play fetch, or you must be hungry.

Are you hungry?

[candothat]

[The correct answer makes his ears perk up. He barks--a small, squeaky sound--and does a little turn in-place.]

[archivy]

Do you want dog food, or human food?

[candothat]

[It doesn't really matter as long as it's edible. Unable to convey this, he sits and gives Ivy an imploring look.]

[archivy]

Well. You cannot eat ice cream. [ She starts walking, confident that the dog/whoever-it-is will follow. ]

[candothat]

[And the dog does indeed follow, bounding along and occasionally pausing to sniff things like a perfectly normal puppy.]

[archivy]

[ She doesn't go very far, just to the next store. ]

You will need to wait outside.

[candothat]

[He whines, but sits obediently. No thumbs and no stores--two bad things about being a dog.]

[archivy]

[ At least she isn't gone for very long, and she's bought some dog food and a bowl for him. ]

[candothat]

[Although dog food isn't the most appetizing thing he has ever smelled, Chekov has eaten things that smelled worse. He comes as close to smiling as ever a dog has.]

[archivy]

[ More than anything, dog food is quick: She can set the bowl down and pour the food in almost immediately. ] There you go.

[candothat]

[He performs one more excited turn before proceeding to eat the dog food as quickly as possible, tail wagging uncontrollably.]

[archivy]

[ She watches, crouched by his side. He really is very cute. ]

[candothat]

[Hunger satisfied, the puppy turns his attention back to Ivy. Chekov doesn't know how dogs are meant to say thank you, never having been around one for long. A very large and very cursed part of him thinks that jumping on the girl and licking her would be the best means of conveying gratitude, but that hardly sounds polite.]

[archivy]

[ She would probably be okay with that, though. In the meantime, she collects the bowl again, the rest of the dog food. ]

Do you want to go to the park?

[candothat]

[He leaps up, tail resuming its enthusiastic wagging.

That would be a yes.]

[archivy]

[ Giving a decisive nod. ] I will get ice cream on the way.

[ and she strides off towards the park. ]

[Korra is outside the ice cream shop, sharing an ice cream cone with Naga. She may not like sweets much, but ice cream is nice and cold and Naga seems to love it.]

[ Naga is-- big. But very pretty, and Ivy watches for a moment, eyes big. ]

Hi there. [Korra smiles at the little girl. She's seen a few blondes since her arrival in the City, but she still finds the golden hair remarkable.] This is my friend Naga. Say hi, Naga.

[She butts Naga a little with her hip, and the polar bear dog lowers her head and starts sniffing the child.]

Hello. [ Giving Korra a nod, her expression carefully blank until Naga starts sniffing, at which point the mask crumbles a little and she smiles, holding her hands out for Naga to sniff at before touching the polar bear dog. ]

[Naga doesn't need any more encouragement to let Ivy keep petting her. A few pedestrians have to dodge her rapidly wagging tail.]

[ And pet her Ivy does- quite enthusiastically, too. Though her face smoothes out again when she turns to Korra. ]

Nice to meet you, Miss Korra. I am the Archive.

The... Archive? Is that a name or a title?

It is both who and what I am.

She leans closer and pokes Ivy's shoulder. The girl feels like a human.]

The Archive. There is only one of me. I am the repository of human knowledge.

I only know everything that has been recorded in some way. And it is magic.
