Well - both, actually. People want things that are important to them, the point of the trade in the first place, whatever they don't already have here. But for payment, it involves sacrifice. They have to upkeep the 'deity' legacy and all that.

Payment is usually in memories - valuable ones. Far as I know, they are restored after a period of time. However, that is no guarantee.
