[First she wanted to cry because he was so nice and he made her feel so safe and cared about. But then she couldn't help but smile a little and almost giggle.]

Oh gosh, no. I'm more likely to be a maid than have one.

It's just me here in my little house in the woods.

Every lady deserves a maid. [ one of his first impressions shall remain, forever, his favored view: Rain on the Titanic, a true lady indeed. ] But, since you're lacking in one, let me send Merlin. He's good company, most nights. [ Merlin's his most prized possession. It's a true gift! ]

Oh, but, that's not fair. I like Merlin, but what if he's busy? I wouldn't want to make trouble.

Trust me, he won't mind. [ or at least he better not. Merlin's still a servant, even if Arthur's no longer capable of giving him employ. ]

It would be nice to not be alone with... him.

[ he pauses and then looks, really looks at Rain. ] Why don't you have someone to look after you or at least share your living quarters a bit more permanently? [ he can't say he likes the idea, but it does seem to appear as though the City has no qualms about bringing just about anyone into the streets as it pleases.

If her father should appear... ]

Mat used to stay with me, but he went home a long time ago. And I only have one bed, so it would have to be someone who didn't mind sharing and snuggling at night.

I don't have to do... things... with people here. That's what everyone says anyway.

[pratful]

And of course you don't. A woman shouldn't be required to anyway. [ unless she's married. ]

A female companion would be the best however... I'll keep my eye open for you. [ note to self, tell Merlin to sleep on the floor. ]

There are a lot of people back home who wouldn't agree with you, but it's different here.

I never shared my bed with a girl - except some of the little ones back home.

And you've shared one with a man? [ he's frowning. That wasn't at all what he expected to hear. In fact, he quite plainly didn't like that idea at all. ]

[Then she looks at him and sees his frown and is instantly cowed - head down, sad almost scared eyes.]

It's - everyone said it wasn't bad or wrong. Except him.

[And he can have a glimpse of the fragile frightened creature that's at the very heart of Rain.]

[ urk, way to hit him right in the gut. ] Well, no, of... course not. It's not wrong per say, so long as he didn't do.

[Her head came up a little as she peeked out at him.]

No. He wanted to do bad things to me, but I ran away.

But I... I did do bad things. To try and help the little ones on the street when they were sick or there was no food. I let men... do things. It was bad and it hurt, but I didn't know what else to do.

Here... I learned that it could be beautiful and that it was okay to do as long as I wanted to.

[ and now it's gone straight into uncomfortable and awkward and things that were far too much information. not that he wasn't fully aware of what women did to survive, but... ]

If it was for children, there is no wrong you could have done. I only regret you had to resort to such methods. Your father should have been a better man, not the filth you were obviously left to cope with.

[Though the odds of Merlin actually finding her house in the middle of the woods is slim to none.]
