[A hand fumbles in front of the camera, then pulls back to show a teenage girl who is looking very confused and a bit scared.]

Where am I? What's going on here?

[She looks around her, then back to the camera. Bringing it closer to her face to better examine it, she narrows her unique eyes, one green, one gold.]

Is this some kind of sick joke? Did you do this, mother?

[The last word is spit out harshly. This is so not a happy mother-daughter relationship.]

I don't know what your angle is this time, but I don't want to talk to you. Send me home right now!

Well... that's something at least.

What do you do here? Do you like, have a job?

Two, sort of. I work as a waitress at The Blue Light—that's a jazz bar—and sometimes I help at my brothers' joke shop. I give flying lessons, too, and I used to go to class when a professor of mine was here, but she—

[Was killed.]

—left.

[She sucks in a breath.]

Wow, that's... a lot. I'm not sure what I could do. I mean, I like to write, but that's not going to get me anywhere. I haven't even graduated high school yet.

I like to keep busy. Not everyone's as mad as me.

[She pauses.]

If it makes you feel any better, I hadn't graduated either when I got here. I was just sixteen then. Why d'you think I went back to class when I could? It felt wrong to not be in one, you know? And I'm not even trying to be top of my class or anything.

Yeah, I know the feeling. My uncle wasn't big on me going to school, but I wanted to, just so I could try to feel normal.

[...and now she wonders if she overshared.]

Um, but anyway, what about the people at home? My family and boyfriend must be really worried about where I've gone.

[Her first statement reminds her of Harry, a little. How Hogwarts was a better place to be than with those awful Dursleys and they'd tried so hard to keep him from it.]

I understand that.

[She doesn't even have to consider her next question, answering easily, reassuringly.]

Don't worry about that. Time's sort of on hold at home while you're here. You won't miss anything and they won't wonder where you've run off to. [Though to not be missed ... ] It'll all pick up again when you go back, it'll be like you never left.

Really? That's a relief.

[And she doesn't even question the validity of this, as she's used her powers to stop time before.]

Thanks for, you know, explaining this to me. A few others have too. I'm not used to so many people being open and helpful like this.

[She's more used to having things kept from her and having to fight for every little piece of information she gets.]

Well, yeah, of course. We were all new once, after all. This place gives us enough questions as it is, may as well share the answers we do know.

Guess I'll be giving people The Speech someday, huh? I mean, the longer I'm stuck here.

Yeah, maybe. [A little more cheerfully,] Great way to meet people, though?

I guess. But new people and I don't always mix well.

Well, I haven't felt the urge to hex you, so I'd say you're doing fairly well.

Oh, you're a magic user?

[She's totally interested! Tell her everything, Ginny.]

[Oops.]

Depends. Do you have magic in your world?

[Look. She had friends once who didn't believe a thing about magic and she's since learned to ease people into it if she needs to. It's a Thing with her now.]

Yeah. We keep it hidden from Mortals, though. Or-- well, most Mortals. It's surprising to hear it talked about so openly here.

It's surprising how many of us have to hide it back home.

[There's a smile in her voice, now.]

We call them Muggles in my world, the non-magical people. It takes a bit to get used to, being a bit more open about something you've got to keep secret, but it's a relief as well.

[Okay, that makes her giggle.]

Muggles? That's a new one. Yeah, I like it. I mean, it's so different, but it is a relief.

I'm a witch, if that means anything. Does your magic require a wand?

[It's a good thing this is voice, because she's making a face at the word "witch." Her people think that term is ridiculous.]

No, no wand. You actually wave a wand around?

[Oh, she knows. She's heard enough from other people to know her lot seems to fill storybooks in a way.]

And fly on a broomstick. Apparently I'm very cliché.

Wow. I guess there's truth to the tales then, huh?

I suppose we weren't very discreet back then and some stuff stuck around long enough to get put into books.

[She laughs.]

Not that the Muggles believe it, of course. We're just fairytales, aren't we? Unless you're here. Then you've sort of got to start believing everything's real.

Yeah, it's weird. I never thought beyond what I could do. But there's different types of magic out there, different than mine.

[Wands. What even.]

Can I ask you stuff about your magic sometime? To like, compare?

Oh, loads different. Some people haven't got to use spells at all, you know, it just happens for them.

[And then Lena's question has her laughing because, Merlin, she's heard that before, hasn't she? From a friend a long time ago, here. She and Christopher had met once to do exactly that.]

Of course you can. Could demonstrate too, if you'd like; I've done that before.

[This amuses Lena, as that's exactly how it works for her. Sure, the more complicated things require reciting the cast out loud, but most things just happen.]

I'd like that. It'll be a learning experience.
