[A hand fumbles in front of the camera, then pulls back to show a teenage girl who is looking very confused and a bit scared.]

Where am I? What's going on here?

[She looks around her, then back to the camera. Bringing it closer to her face to better examine it, she narrows her unique eyes, one green, one gold.]

Is this some kind of sick joke? Did you do this, mother?

[The last word is spit out harshly. This is so not a happy mother-daughter relationship.]

I don't know what your angle is this time, but I don't want to talk to you. Send me home right now!

What are they counting on? Doesn't anybody know why we're here?

They're not exactly big on answers. Mostly it just looks like they wanna see us cursed.

So we're just like their little pets?

[errandry]

... Nah, it's not like that. Doesn't even look like they pay attention most of the time.

[claimyourself]

It sounds more like we're their discarded toys then. Great.

[She sighs.]

If they don't pay attention, why do they bother? It sounds stupid to me.

Got me on that one. They're not exactly out to win prizes for Most Logical of the Year.

Irrational people in charge. Yeah, that's the way to run things. Just kidnap people and torture them for fun, but don't bother paying attention to them at all. This place really sucks already.

[errandry]

[ laughs—a little quietly, because at least she doesn't sound totally scared. ]

Kinda, yeah. It's not all bad, though.

I guess there's plenty to do, when we're not fending off curses.

Kinda depends on what you're used to, too! ... oh, hey—you know what microwaves are?

[claimyourself]

Uh, yeah, of course. Why?

Just checking how big a culture shock this is gonna be.

There are people here who don't know what a microwave is?

There are people here who still use alchemy.

[claimyourself]

[That actually sounds really cool to her.]

How are they adjusting?

[errandry]

Everybody kinda gets used to it after a while. Guess tech's way less complicated than magic.

[claimyourself]

[That makes her want to laugh, because it's oh-so-true.]

I guess. Do you know a lot about magic?

[errandry]

Just what I hear about it from other people! They've got a ton of different kinds here, though.

[claimyourself]

They do? What do you mean, "different kinds?"

[errandry]

Different systems! I told you about the alchemists, right? There's another kind that's pretty much just elemental stuff and healing. And another guy who can see the future and talk to everything alive.

[claimyourself]

That's... interesting. I mean, it's just surprising, is all.

[errandry]

What, your world doesn't have magic either?

[claimyourself]

No, it does... I guess that's all right to admit here. But it's only one... it's hard to explain. We can do all sorts of things, but it's one form of magic. Not different like here.

[errandry]

Nah, I think I get it. Just one system, right?

[claimyourself]

Right. That sounds like a better word for it.
