[ There's a little girl standing by the carousel. She's very neatly dressed: a red dress peaking out under a black coat, shoes polished and her hair in pigtails. Her accent, when she speaks, is faintly British: ]

So this is the City? I have been here before, it appears. Kincaid, where-- [ she breaks off, a fleeting expression of sadness and fear crossing her features before they become impassive again. ] Kincaid is not here.

I will require a place to stay, certainly for the night, and a meal. I strongly believe in regular mealtimes for children. If anyone could help me with one or both, I would be much obliged.

[ He chuckles slightly and follows, slipping in across from her. Then comes a waiter, greeting them, passing out menus, and asking what they'd like to drink. ]

[archivy]

[ Ivy already knows the menu, but she opens it anyways and gives it a cursory glance. At times, she likes seeing the words in front of her, even though she remembers them perfectly. It feels normal.

She orders pizza hawaii because she likes how sweet pineapples are, and apple juice. ]

[mintjulep]

[ McCoy doesn't know the menu quite as well, but he's been to this place before. He orders the lasagna, as well as some milk, and the waiter promises to return with salad and breadsticks. ]

[archivy]

[ Ivy gives McCoy a smile; somewhat on the bland and neutral side as far as smiles go. ]

I assume you have questions.

[mintjulep]

Yeah, I do.

[ One hand rubs the back of his neck for a moment. ]

You said you know my name because you're The Archive. What does that mean?

[archivy]

I am the sum of human knowledge. My purpose is to preserve knowledge. I remember everything from my world or this that is recorded. You mentioned your name on the network, I remembered it.

[mintjulep]

The sum of human knowl--

[ Okay. Deep breath. ]

So are you actually a child?

[archivy]

I am. I am eleven years old and human. The Archive is passed down from mother to daughter through the generations.

[mintjulep]

And it's a... magic thing?

[ Magic. Urgh. ]

[archivy]

Yes.

[mintjulep]

We don't have that where I'm from, as far as I know.

[ Which, well, she might know -- but it makes him feel better to say it. ]

[archivy]

I am aware of that. And perhaps at some point there will be a scientific explanation for the magic in my world, but for now it remains magic.

[mintjulep]

I can't imagine it'd be safe, having people know who you are.

[archivy]

It is not. I will need to hire a bodyguard as soon as possible, but in the meantime rest assured that I am quite capable of defending myself.

[mintjulep]

I suppose background checks are pretty easy for you, huh?

[archivy]

Certainly easier than for most.

[ Their food arrives and Ivy's face lights up for a moment before she can rearrange it into neutrality. ]

[mintjulep]

[ He watches her for a moment. She's just a kid -- a kid who happens to know... a whole helluva lot. It must be tough.

McCoy will go ahead and take a bite of his food, thinking. ]

[archivy]

I really like pizza.

[ It's muttered quietly, quickly and Ivy takes a bite of her pizza immediately after, making herself chew carefully. ] It is a pity that it is not healthy.

[mintjulep]

It's good. Not something to eat every day, but if you take care with the rest of your food and exercise, it's okay. Especially when you're young.

[ She shouldn't be worrying about how often she eats pizza, god damn. ]

[archivy]

You are a very kind man, Doctor McCoy.

[mintjulep]

Oh. Uh. Thank you.

[archivy]

You don't need to thank me for that.

[mintjulep]

[ Pausing a moment to consider that, before she smiles minutely. ] You're welcome.
