Entry 1; Day 1 {Entry 613; Day 1573}
I don't recall coming to this place, but I suppose we must have arrived last night. Riff and I, I mean. I wouldn't travel with anyone else. Someone told me it's called 'the City', which I think is rather a stupid name for a city. Cities ought to have proper names, like London and Paris and Moscow and Rome do. Everyone talks about 'going into the city' and everyone knows what city they mean, because they usually mean London, but you can't very well have a city called 'the City' because then how could anyone know what city you mean? It's rather stupid, I think.
Perhaps it says something about the people who live here too, though I rather hope not. Most of the people I've met so far seem quite friendly. I went out into the town earlier today to see it for myself. There seem to be a great many children here, which I rather liked.
Anyway, I've not yet found Riff, but I suspect he's on some errand or other. I'm quite sure he and I must have arrived here very late last night and I couldn't see where we were because of the darkness. I would certainly never fall asleep on the train or in the carriage. That would be unseemly. But I'm not worried. He'll show his face soon enough when he knows I truly need him. He might even see me writing this and come home to tell me I shouldn't have written so much or been so unkind about something. Not that he actually scolds me. He wouldn't dare do that. But he'll tell me these things sometimes. I suppose he means well, though I don't always listen to him. I like it better when he brings me tea and keeps my aunts and uncles away.
I suppose that might be why we came here: to get away from my aunts and uncles. Do you see how I wrote that? With the : and everything? You see, you have to have an excellent way with words and know how to use them properly when you're an earl. And since I am an earl, I have to have an excellent way with words. It only makes sense.
I seem to recall that my father and I visited this place. That was before he died. I think some people must have made this theatre into a hotel, because we've certainly stayed her before. It's quite comfortable, I think. There are two cats here who seem to like me very much. And I think I like them very much too. I didn't have many pets when I was younger, but I suppose now I can have all the pets I choose.
Riff should come back very soon, I hope. Perhaps he's gone to fetch supper. If he doesn't come back, I shall have to find my own supper. And I know he'll be cross if I find something for myself. But I'm quite old enough to do that sort of thing. I've even a bit of money I can spend if I go back into the town again. I went out earlier today to take a look around. It's really a rather pleasant town and I like it quite well. I could easily see myself coming back here to visit again. It is quaint and picturesque but perhaps it is a little peculiar.
I rather like having such a thing that I can write on as I please. I needn't send this like a letter to anyone, nor do I need to keep it to myself as I would in a journal. It's rather like anyone writing something for a newspaper as he pleases, and anyone who wants to read it very well can. It's rather grand, I think.
And I think I will see to my own supper tonight. Riff can tell me that I shouldn't have gone out by myself or that he meant to bring me supper a little later but he can't very well stop me if he isn't here, now can he? Yes, I believe I will go out.
Good evening to everyone in 'The City' and thank you for your hospitality. It is a great pleasure to visit your city.

This time, he's been aged down to just after his father has (apparently) jumped to his death. Which means that this youthful Cain isn't in his shadow or under his thumb. Expect trouble!]

But what is this place...? I can't seem to find my parents anywhere...

I don't know what this place is. I thought, for a while, it might be a town set aside for the mad. It certainly seems a bit mad to me. It doesn't even have a proper name! But I don't know what it is either.

Oh... I wonder if it's safe... M-maybe we should go to the Police Station...?

[ooc: May I just pause and say that your choice for a youthful PB for Raikov is completely perfect?]

I think I will... and I hope you find your friend soon.
[OOC: Eheheh thanks. As soon as Eric brought Alois in years ago, I was like "... that's totally Raikov as a kid."]

Do be careful, though, won't you? It is a proper city out there.

Oh- I almost forgot... I'm Ivan Raidenovitch. It's been nice talking with you, Earl Hargreaves.

Good day to you Earl Cain, [Cain adopts his finest "Hero of the Imperium" voice]
I am Commissar Ciaphas Cain: Regimental Commissar of the 597th Valhallan Ice Warriors. I couldn't agree with you more on the poor decision-making skills of this city's founders but, despite that shortcoming, I've found it to be rather pleasant thus far. I understand that your aide, Riff, is missing. I'm afraid that, due to the unnatural nature of this City, he wont' be able to join you. [He gives an understanding look]
The same thing befell my own aide, Gunner Jurgen, when I was brought here. You see, M'lord: This is a city filled, entirely, with people who have been stolen from different times, places, and worlds. As such you will be, in all likelyhood, the only person from the world you know within the City. It can be a bit daunting, I know, but the people here are welcoming and helpful. You should be able to be kept in the manner to which you are accustomed throughout your time here, with minimal difficulty. Should you find yourself short on companions during your time here, M'lord, I would be pleased to become better acquainted with you. [Cain becomes more genuine in his tone of voice and mannerisms as he continues on] I've never met another Cain before, Earl or otherwise, and I'd imagine it would be interesting for the both of us to see what kind of person our "opposite numbers" are.
[Cain is painfully ignorant of the way curses work throughout the city and, having never met Earl Cain before his de-aging, is under the impression that this truly is his first few days in the city. As such he's caking on the "good first impression" cream and working hard to come off suave and heroic. Nobility are so hard to please.]
[Cain re-assumes his serious/heroic tone as he draws to a close]
I shall look forwards to hearing from you, Earl Cain. Good luck in your search for Riff, and, welcome to the City.

Thank you. It's very kind of you to welcome me to the City. I haven't been very clear on what sort of a city this is, so I thank you for telling me more about it. But I have no doubt in my mind that Riff will be able to find me here. He's able to find me anywhere. So it may take him some time, but I feel sure he'll find me very soon. I certainly hope you find the person you're looking for as well.
I've never met anyone else named Cain either. How... How did you come by your name?

[In Commissar Cain's world child nobility is something that, while he dissaproves of it, is heavily present throughout the galaxy. Upon Lord Cain's reply he notices the excitement at being treated like an adult, but is completely ignorant as to it's cause. Well I'll be... he seems a decent sort after all.]
[Commissar Cain adopts his ultra-formal "Hero of the Imperium" voice again]
I admire your faith in your aide's abilities, M'Lord. This Riff character must be quite the determined fellow to have earned your confidence in such a strong way. That being said; I wish him the Emperor's-own speed in returning to your side. I'm sure that, much like it is with my aide and me, it's even more so with yours. A truly good aide, assistant, butler, or what have you is a rare and wonderful thing, but an even harder thing to lose.
[Commissar Cain becomes ever-so-slightly melancholy as he starts his next topic]
Though I would never want to replace Jurgen, I may need to adopt a temporary aide while here in the city if he doesn't arrive here soon. I have duties that need attending to [Well... more like I wish I had duties to attend to] and they are rather difficult to attend to by myself. Have you considered seeking out a temporary aide in the event that your man Riff is delayed in his appearance M'Lord? If I may say so, it may be a prudent course of action in light of the way that time flows in the City.
As to my name, M'Lord. I was born with it. I'm not sure what inspired my parents to choose that particular name, but, it's served me faithfully thus far and I've been given no reason to take issue with it. [Cain chuckles to himself]

Well, it seems a sensible thing to do, though I may not do so myself. But if you've so much to do, it may do you very well to take on someone else for help for a little while.
How very curious. My father gave me my name. [His voice turns a bit darker.] And I know he had his own reasons for giving it to me.
