Action:

[In the late hours of the afternoon, a large, well groomed dog can be seen padding around the City. It looks completely at home wandering among the streets. Occasionally it will stop on a street corner, watching the crowd, almost as if it's waiting for something, or someone.

When evening comes, the dog will be sat outside Lucky's, barking excitedly at everyone that comes by, wagging its tail.]

[When Ruby finally does return to her own form, she finds that she has the same communicator as she had during her previous stay in the City. She smiles brightly as she waves at the camera.]

It figures that I'd get hit with a curse the moment I set foot back in this place. I guess some things never change.

...Although, there is a lot that's changing about this place. For instance, I heard talk that someone's trying to build a door out of here? And I've not been back two minutes, either.

[She sounds disappointed. Her previous disdain of the City is quite missing, and that surprises Ruby more than anyone.]

It was nothing particularly scandalous. It simply shared more of my business dealings with my partner than I would have otherwise preferred.

Ah. Yeah, that kind of stuff should stay secret. Even in a place like this you never know who's listening.

And you'd never believe the questions I got asked as a result of that memory.

Let me guess. They wanted to know whether you were really just business partners.

That, and the ever-popular "are you a mobster?"

And how did you answer them?

Tersely and vaguely, but diplomatically, given the circumstances.

[A little smile, because that's likely not the answer she's looking for.]

I certainly hope that, by your time, people have better questions than that to ask me. I can't imagine being fifty and still dealing with those incessant queries.

[glamorsongstress]

I'd rather you were still around at fifty and dealing with them than the alternative. [She has to push thoughts of what's going to happen to Al out of her head.] But I wouldn't know, I never did meet up with you back in my time. I did hear your name mentioned once - you were abroad somewhere. Cuba, maybe? I don't know. But my memories of this place ... actually, that's the reason I don't want to leave. Like, I knew how to play poker suddenly, but didn't remember learning - everything about here was gone until the moment I got back. If they're going to force us to be here, the least they could do is let us remember.

Cuba, hmmm? Can't imagine why I'd want to go there.

[A slow nod.]

That's what happened the time I went home, too. Gone only two days from the City, but when I was back in New York, it was like nothing had ever happened. That's the only thing I'll miss about this place... Although I guess I won't know that I'm missing it.

If we're not going to remember, then what's even the point of being here at all? [The bitterness towards the deities, or this Anonymous, whoever they think they are, is back again in her tone.]

[He sighs. He's of a similar mindset -- cynical -- but that doesn't mean he won't try to talk her out of it.]

You don't remember a lot of being a little kid, do you? Only I highly doubt you'd regret having been one, since it helped made you who you are now. Maybe the City's the same way, yes?

[glamorsongstress]

[She smiles sadly.] My childhood's something I'd rather change completely if I could, so maybe it's not the best example. But I see what you mean. Even so, it's not the City that's made me who I am, but the people I met here. I want to remember them, if nothing else.

Sure, you'd rather change the circumstances of it, but you wouldn't erase it entirely. It had some influence on you, whether positive or negative. And so did the City, and the people here.

[He shrugs.]

I don't like the idea of forgetting either.

At least you have people waiting for you when you get back, though.

"People" is putting it generously, but yes, I do. Although I'd be surprised if you didn't have someone waiting for you.

Me? [She laughs deprecatively , shaking her head.] No, I didn't really have any ties when I got back. Just a career to try and salvage.

[recognize_an_opportunity]

[He nods silently, and then...]

Look, you can get an apartment tomorrow. It's late tonight; why don't you stay at my apartment, and we'll get you settled in.

[It's amazing that it doesn't feel awkward to suggest this to her, but it seems entirely natural.]

[glamorsongstress]

[Ruby smiles gratefully.] I'd really appreciate that. I'll cook you breakfast.

You can certainly do that, I won't complain; it'll be a nice break from the normal routine.

[Which may or may not involve sleeping in his office...]

Say, just how Jewish are you when it comes to that, anyway? Would you complain if I made bacon?

[recognize_an_opportunity]

[He can't help laughing at her question, shaking his head.]

What, you can't tell just from looking at me I eat everything?

[He looks pointedly down at his vest, which always seems to be just a little too small, and then back up at her.]

I eat bacon. I eat pork chops. I eat all the things my mother would be horrified by, if she knew.

You know, there's part of me that thinks she'd be more horrified by that than your choice of career. [She smiles fondly.]

She absolutely would. The worst thing I've ever done, in her opinion, is not being unfailingly religious.

Well, I for one am glad you're not. I don't think we'd get on half as well.
