38 [[ sandspotting; backdated to a little earlier this week

[ Surprisingly, Toph's device is still working, despite sand abuse. She's sitting around near the camp when she feels some familiar footsteps... not particularly close. ] Wait... is that idiot really wandering around the desert on foot? [ She shouts: ] Hey, Tyr! Stay put. [ Who knows if he'll hear her. ]

Char, Bad Jokes, Runaway, Bitey... the rest of you I don't have nicknames for... I've got to go rescue somebody. I'll be back later.

[ ooc: Okay, so Toph is leaving her lovely caravan to find Tyr and a few other people... Rita, Riou, basically anyone who wants to join in! Feel free to have your own threads and threadjack and mingle, etc. She'll meet back up with the caravan group later. ]

[ The rest of the statement is drowned out as Toph whips sand into the air, creating a small sandstorm. Luckily she hasn't caught up to her other friends yet. They probably wouldn't appreciate the blinding. ]

[ Maybe she can hear it, maybe she can't, but Aang cheers loudly. He can see the sand she is whipping. It worked! That almost never happens.

Aang focuses more of his energy on airbending Appa something a lot less sandy to fly through. They reach Toph within three minutes. Aang leaps off the bison and throws his arms around Toph, squeezing her tightly.

He breathes a sigh of relief. ] I almost thought I lost you. [ More like he got lost, and wouldn't find anyone ever again. ]

[ Toph submits to the hug (and maybe hugs back a little, okay). But then she pulls free and punches him on the arm. ] No need for the mush, Twinkletoes. I'm right here.

[ She's smiling, though. ] Better than the last desert already.

[ He rubs his arm, but is smiling anyway. ]

You can say that again. [ Appa gives a friendly roar and presses his nose gently against Toph's head. ]

So? What can I do to help? Did you find everyone you were looking for?

Yeah, we're getting there. I think. You want to help me look? [ She grins. ] You can be my eyes in the sky.

Yeah! And it'll be a good chance to practice my sandbending. [ He pauses. ] You know? For rescuing people. [ He shudders a tiny bit. ]

Man, I hope we don't run into any monsters out here. [ But saying that pretty much guarantees that they will. ]

What, you're not having any fun with the sand worms, the sand dragons, and the sand what-the-heck-is-that-thing? Can't imagine why. [ She's teasing. ] It has to be the only way to make a desert more dangerous, I swear.

[ Sarcasm noted. Aang just shakes his head. ] I didn't think such creatures could survive in this kind of climate. Guess that just shows there's not a lot I know about deserts. Still, at this point, I think I'd rather fight the giant Spirit Owl.

I still can't believe you guys fought a giant Spirit Owl. How do you keep making ancient spirits angry at you? [ This seems to be a rhetorical question. ] I hear there aren't any monsters on the glass side, at least.

[ Toph's comment makes him laugh. And hopefully they can get to the glass side. Aang's going to be optimistic about their chances. ]

In the North Pole-- [ Before Aang can finish a large, and rather nasty sand worm emerges from the sand in a dusty explosion. The Airbender is quick to bend the sand away from their faces, but not before he chokes on the dust cloud. ]

[ Toph claps him on the back, but clearly the important thing to do is to fight the sandworm. Aang can cough all he wants, but if he's in the belly of the monster, it sure isn't going to do him any good. ]

[ Sand is such an ineffectual bending material, ugh. She tries to bend it into the monster's eyes. ]

I could use some help here!

Sorry! [ Aang stops his airbending, but he almost instantly regrets it. Earthbending the sand is very hard. If Toph weren't with him.

He jumps next to his teacher, landing hard enough so that she could definitely see him and starts helping her bend the sand in the monsters eyes. The worm is hissing, so it must be working, not that Aang can really see. ]

That sounds good doesn't it? [ Aang asks just for confirmation. ]

Sounds like we've made him mad. [ She grins. ] Let's make it worse. Don't stop! [ She redoubles her efforts, wishing she had real rocks to throw, but doing what she can. ]

[ Aang copies Toph, doing less damage than her, but still doing his best. ]

MAYBE WE CAN BLOW HIM AWAY WITH A TORNADO! [ Between his airbending and her earthbending they might be able to knock him back and away from attacking them. ]

[ Oh hey, now that sounds like fun. ] Let's do it, Twinkletoes! Ready?

[ She digs her heels into the sand deeper, bracing herself for a really strong sandbending. ]

[ Aang makes sure he's as firm on the ground as he can be too, before shouting his response. ] READY! [ Fortunately for Aang, airbending tornados is a lot easier than bending sand into it. Not that there isn't sand everywhere already.

Aang is impressed to see a very nice, at least ten foot tall, sandy tornado. ] OH YEAH! THIS IS DEFINITELY GONNA DO IT!

[ Time to focus on slamming the monster with it. ]

[ That is a beautiful tornado. Toph doesn't need to see to appreciate it. She'll coordinate with Aang as closely as possible to slam the beast with their attack.

And it seems to work! The creature howls and begins to beat a hasty retreat. ]

We're awesome. [ Toph sounds very satisfied. ]

Oh yeah! That ought to keep them from coming back. [ Maybe... If the others saw it. ]

Yeah, I bet. Take that as a warning! [ Shouted out over the sand. ]

Good to find you in one piece, Twinkletoes. You ready to help me rescue some people?

You know I am. [ He smiles widely and turns back to Appa and Momo. ] Stay here guys, we'll be back soon. [ Appa probably needs a rest too.

He bends air around them to keep the sand out of their faces. ] Lead the way Toph.
