Video (Fourth Wall Weekend)

So, um...

[He never knows what to expect when there're all these people around here. Should he get up his hopes and think that he'll know someone? Or should he just treat it like any other curse? It's perplexing. He scratches his head.]

For all of you that, y'know, just randomly arrived here, welcome. You'll only be here for the weekend, so don't get too concerned about it. Consider it, uh, a vacation, or somethin'. You can ask me questions, if you want, but I gotta say, a whole lot of this place don't make much sense.

[A long pause of indecision, and then finally...]

'n if I know you... I mean, if I know you from home, if there's any chance you're out there... just lemme know, okay?

It's been a while - well. It has been for me, at least.

How long? But you still remember me?

A little over five years, I think. It's hard to tell.

[ Definitely before things went really bad. He purses his lips and gives a small nod. ]

Some of it started to come back when I found myself here - the people more than the specifics.

Five years. Shit. What happened while you were gone? I mean, that's a damn long time.

[ He can't help his reaction here - it's a reflex that pulls his expression into a sardonic smile, a breath of a laugh as he shakes his head. ]

Honestly? A lot more than I think I can cover.

[ Five years littered with death, pain, doubt, the remnants of destroyed relationships, and the desperation to hang on serving as an ongoing background theme. And then -- then there's the looming end in sight. ]

Some of it has been rough. [ An understatement, but he's quick to add: ] I'm all right, right now.

[ The addendum isn't untrue. There are better and worse days, but here in the moment, he's largely okay. More than one might expect, if they knew everything. ]

Okay, yeah, I understand that, a lot can happen in five years. Shit, I can't imagine.

[He's still studying Wilson intently, though, as though he's not hearing the whole story, and he's not sure he is.]

Wait, so if you're visitin' here... is the other you still here, too? Could you, y'know, talk to him? How the fuck does that work?

[ A lot. He just gives a steady, solemn nod. ]

He is.

[ Not "I am" - definitely not. While technically they may be the same person they also, quite decidedly, are not. ]

I suppose I could talk to him, but... I don't really intend to. It might not unmake reality or anything quite that extreme, but it's more than I think either of... well, me can handle.

Yeah, no shit. I wouldn't talk to a future me, either.

[A long pause.]

Well, uh, there is no future me, so I guess I couldn't anyway. But a past me, then. It'd just be strange.

[ That long pause, "no future me" - he can relate to that, and he can't suppress the frown that reflects that. ]

It's always been one of those classic what ifs - what would you tell your younger self, given the chance. We weren't supposed to ever have the chance to act on it. Not that the City is short on impossibilities, by my recollection, but...

[ But this is too much. ]

I doubt there would be anything to say that would matter, anyway. We don't take it back with us - or, at least, I didn't.

I'm pretty sure my younger self wouldn't listen to me anyway, y'know? 'n like you say, you don't take it back with you.

[He sighs.]

So there's no use in looking back, wishing we had done things differently, that we had a chance to redo things and remake choices that we can't change now.

[ That might sound nihilistic, but it's said calmly - with an almost peaceful acceptance. ]

Hey, I agree with you. What's happened's happened. Guess we just gotta make the best of it.

For as long as we can.

'n hopefully that'll be a little while longer yet, for the both of us.
