The 93rd Song

[Rapunzel is working on dinner, quiet and alone in her apartment, window cracked open a bit...

Which, of course, is enough to let a certain hat float in and perch on her head.]

...well, uh. Hello there....hat.

[She just blinks, confused. This is typical city weird, of course. Flying hats.

Flying hats that talk are a bit more weird.]

HUFFLEPUFF!!

[And just as quick as it arrived, the hat leaves through the window in much the same way it came. Rapunzel just sort of...stares, confused, blinking.]

....What just happened? Talking hats...that's a new one, I'll give the City that...

You got that too, huh? I mean, the flying hat, and it calling you a Hufflepuff, whatever that's supposed to be. I'd question how hats could talk, but I guess in the City, anything's possible.

The City doesn't seem to have rules about what should and shouldn't talk. But I knew somebody once, who mentioned Hufflepuff. I think it's a house at a school, and apparently its a good one.

This is probably going to sound like a really stupid statement, but you know, since we're not at a school right now... why's it yelling things about school houses at us?

...uh.

[She blinks.]

Good question....maybe it's an upcoming curse? Or maybe the curse is just the hat yelling out where we should be?

Well, that's a lot less awful than a lot of the curses've been, so I'm gonna hope for that. I think. Unless there's something else to it that turns out to be terrible.

I'm sure if they're giving us notice ahead of time that it won't be so terrible. They only like to spring the really bad curses.

That's a good point. I like the way you think. Nice and optimistic. Mostly.

Oh, thank you! I'm Rapunzel, by the way, I don't know if we've met.

Michael Ginsberg, but, um, just Ginsberg is fine. Rapunzel's a nice name. Interesting. Creative. You probably hear that a lot.

Ginsberg. I like that! Nice to meet you...oh, thank you! I actually don't, to be honest, but I'm glad you think it's a nice name. I've always liked it, myself.

It's very, you know, kind of old fashioned. Anyway, it's a lot better than my name. Well, Ginsberg's okay, but sometimes people get weird about me just going by my last name.

Why? It's a nice last name, very unique. Lots of people use their last names, anyway, so...

Well, when I say people get weird about it, I mostly mean my dad. But you know how parents are. I mean, they're kind of unreasonable in some way or another. That's just how it is.

Oh, believe me, I understand how parents can be.

[She sighs, rolling her eyes a bit.] My mother is a bit weird at times, I get it.

[haha she's lying a little. Her mother is WAY weird.]

Yeah, exactly, so you know what it's like. My dad's one of those really overprotective guys. It's like he thinks that I need him to be constantly watching me. I mean, I get why he's paranoid, I just think it's excessive. It's probably a good thing nobody really knows we're here -- you know, that time doesn't pass while we're gone -- because he'd probably have the FBI, the CIA, the State Patrol, and the National Guard looking for me if he knew.

My mother's one of those overprotective types too! She's paranoid beyond all reason, it's completely insane!! I don't know what she'd do if she knew I was here, outside...

[She laughs, shaking her head.]

Panic, I bet. Though it's nice to be out and about without her watching me, so...I can't say I feel too bad. Is that bad?

No, it's not bad. I mean, if it's bad, then I'm bad, too, because there's a part of me that's kind of okay with being here. A really small part. The part that isn't totally freaked out by all these curses, and stuff.

[A pause.]

Wait, did you say you don't know what she'd do if she knew you were outside? She doesn't let you go outside? Or is that some kind of figure of speech?

You want to know something? I've been here for 3 years...give or take. And even if you don't get completely used to the curses, it's actually really great living here. There's lots of nice people, it's never boring here...

[Ah. Well, now she looks a bit sheepish.]

...it's not a figure of speech.

So far I like a lot of the people. I mean, a lot of the people are pretty weird, like me, so it kind of makes me feel like I fit in okay. Which is a rare feeling for me.

[He's frowning now.]

Why didn't she let you go outside? If that's a rude question, I'm sorry, and you don't have to answer it.

It's a good feeling. I've never felt weird or anything here. Different is different and it's a good thing here, and...well, I like it.

[She sighs, running her hand through her hair...before holding some of it up to show off the length.]

You know the fairytale Rapunzel? Yeah, it's something like that.

Somehow I kinda get the sense that it's not really just something like that... that it actually is that. That might be crazy of me to say, but...

But it's sort of true...trust me, it was a bit of a shock, finding out that my life is a children's story in other worlds.

[She didn't take it very well. But she's had time to adjust to this fact, and her life is still her's, story or not. So, she's not so frazzled at the moment.]

That kinda makes me wonder whether that might be true for all of us. I mean, I don't think my life is a children's story in anyone else's world, because that'd be an incredibly boring story, but overall, what if it were true?

What, that we're all stories?

I don't know, honestly. I mean, it's certainly possible, and...honestly? I don't think it's so bad, being a story someplace else. Stories make people happy, or they help them, or inspire them...so if it's true, that's a good thing right?

[After all, what is a person but the sum of their memories? They are all stories in the end. It's a nice way of thinking.]

You've got a point there. Maybe that's true. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad. At least we'd be having an impact on someone. I like your way of thinking. It's optimistic.

I'd like to think that, yeah...and even if we aren't, well. We can make important impacts on people we know anyway!

A lot of people are Hufflepuffs here in the City. [ He thinks it's rather nice, he's never disliked a 'Puff before. ]

It's from my world, from my school actually. And don't worry, it won't hurt you.

...Oh. OH, I know what this is!! This is one of the houses at Ginny's school, right? I knew her brother, he mentioned Hufflepuff!

[She remembers Percy saying that Hufflepuff was a good house. She looks rather pleased now.]

I just wasn't expecting the talking hat. It was a bit of a surprise, to be honest.

[ He smiles and it's sweet and amused. ] The hat is what helps us get sorted. And yes, Hufflepuff is one of the four.

I think Percy mentioned the hat, once...It's been a while...

[She shrugs, smiling a bit.]

So, they're going to do something related to your school then? Like...magic related?

[She's a bit excited now. The magic that Ginny and her brothers could do was different than magic healing hair, and it was always fascinating...]

I don't know, but perhaps? It would definitely seem so with the sorting hat here but I've not been around long enough to know if this is a sign.

Well, if nothing else, this should be sort of interesting...!
