So I hope I've done this right, because I reaaaaally need to talk about this, and my son would be mortified if he knew I was.

My son approached me the other day talking about how he was effectively seeing two people. At the same time. Not behind one or the other's back, but together. And...this is so far out of my wheelhouse that I'm seriously considering buying out the entire wine section at the grocery store as a coping mechanism.

Should I be discouraging this? Or supportive? Or what? My teenage son is...ugh, I don't even know, anymore.

Probably not, but I can't exactly write to Dear Abby. This is a mothering crisis I didn't see coming.

I mean, yeah, of course you're worried! But if my mom decided to put my relationship status all over the place I'd probably disown her.

[ She doesn't mean any of this harshly. She's just sixteen. And acts like a teenager. Teenage solidarity. ] I mean, is he out in public about this? Because people can probably do the math.

So for, you know uh, humans? The three people thing, that's... not acceptable?

Then I'll deal with Scott being upset with me. I have a job as his mother to make sure he's healthy and safe. If that means embarrassing him, fine.

It's not that it's not acceptable. Just very...difficult. Most grown adults can't manage that sort of relationship, let alone teenagers.

Oh. So you're worried someone's going to get hurt?

Exactly. Yup. Not just hurt, but really hurt.

How do people usually stop that from happening, then?

[mamanurse]

That's where it gets complicated? Hence why I'm asking the question.

Did I say anything about sex? No. I said dating.

So either you have advice, or you're busting my chops over how I choose to handle my son. If it's the second one? Thanks but no.

Firstly, if your son would be mortified to know you're talking about this, he's probably going to be. Secrets in the city last about as long as an icicle in hell, particularly when you upload them to a public network. Just be prepared for it.
