In full disclosure, I'm really not sure exactly what a deep fried Oreo is, but I'm getting the feeling that I should have stopped eating them a little bit sooner than I actually did.

[ A lot sooner, Harry. ]

Despite some questionable choices I may have made, the fair is still interesting... I've been wondering about how this works, whether the people and the entire fair just slipped into the City somehow. Does that sort of thing happen a lot here? I'm still pretty new to the place, so I'm probably asking questions that have come up before - so, sorry about that. I just can't help but be curious about it.

[ Which is why he'll be discretely trying to get some tricorder readings on the City's county fair. He's very careful about it, keeping the tricorder securely in a small backpack whenever he's not well-hidden, and otherwise casually observing and enjoying the events. No sign of Starfleet, just as there was no mention thereof - he wears simply casual civilian clothing appropriate for the City's approximate time period.

If action is desired, feel free to run into him when he's perusing the fair's activities, or laugh at him for eating too much junk - or not knowing what an Oreo is. Just wait until he starts getting sentimental over the pie. ]

[ janeway could've done this over the secure starfleet channel, but of course what she needs to request of him involves that very thing. that's why she ventures out into the depths of the fair to speak with him in person, her own tricorder hidden in the pocket of her cardigan. she rarely leaves home (or at least, what has become their permanent residence in this place) without it. ]

Harry. [ she steps seemingly out of nowhere, placing a hand on the ensign's arm. ] Enjoying the festivities?

Be thankful. [ she smiles affectionately, patting his shoulder before taking hold of his elbow to steer him in a direction less full of people. ] It could be worse. That deep fried Oreo you mentioned on the network could've been deep fried leola root.

[ tbh the food, both the abundance and availability of it, as well as how terran it is, is the best thing about being stuck in this place. she does not miss living off of neelix's cooking and replicator rations. ]

I wanted to speak to you about the network, actually. [ she looks left, then right, and only after she verifies that nobody's within earshot or paying them any measure of attention does she add: ] Our private channel in particular.

[Lydia opts to spend at least one night at the fair on her own, just kind of bumping into people in passing.]

Deep fried oreos go straight to your hips. But a few bites never hurt anyone.

Unless of course they also offer deep fried twinkies.

Oh, I know you wouldn't. [ if anything confidential that was meant to be kept between her crew and her crew only got around, it would chakotay's door she'd be knocking on. her first officer was more likely to say something (albeit with good reason) than harry was. ] I was speaking more in terms of strengthening that channel.

Tell me, Harry -- just how much Borg knowledge have you picked up on from working with Seven of Nine? [ she's banking on him having picked up on at least a few borg encryption sequences, which she knows were used in fortifying the astrometrics lab's long range sensors. ]

Sort of the yang to a deep fried Oreo's yin. Golden cake filled with a vanilla cream and then of course deep fried.

[Lydia's having a hard time not lining up for funnel cake and elephant ears. Straight to the hips, Lydia! Straight to the hips!]

The danger is relative I suppose, depending on your metabolism. Kind of how the ringtoss and dart throw are dangerous to your pocket.

I think you're probably fine until you hit the deep-fried jelly donuts.

[Pai has wandered off from Hei and is watching Harry with frank interest.

Well, not him so much as those deep-fried oreos. They smell really good.]

People and things slip in every day, almost. Usually it is only one or two people, or maybe monsters. Big things, like this?

[He's at the fair and makes an all-encompassing gesture in lieu of remembering what this kind of deep-fried, game-filled madness is called.]

These slip in maybe once a month, sometimes more or less. No one sees them appear and no one sees them disappear. I have never known anyone to stay inside a place like this at midnight, which is when they usually go, so maybe they can take people with them. It would be an interesting experiment.

Oh, if anyone has control over the City, it is no one we have met. The Anonymous Movement--I've been speaking with them more and they are more confused than the deities were, and not even the deities were in full control. I think that there is a super-evolved intelligence at work, but maybe not directly. Maybe they created this world with an internal method of regulation and are waiting to see what will happen, or maybe they actively intervene.

I like to speculate on this. Please don't tell Spock? He frowns on empty speculation.

[He sighs wistfully.]

The risk of disappearing into an interuniversal oblivion or being torn apart by tidal forces or otherwise obliterated? That is the only reason I've not tried it. I left a device in the Square, once, when there was a party, but I lost all contact with it after midnight.
