[ The memory kicks in with Jim and Leonard in their cadet uniforms, the latter trying to get through to his distracted friend. There's a sense of needing to be active and occupied until he takes the Kobayashi Maru test again tomorrow, higher stakes pitted on his side this time; his feet lead him to Gaila's room where he wastes some time before Nyota Uhura returns ("You can hear me breathing?") and kicks him out.

The scene flickers to the set of the Kobayashi Maru, Spock's old program, and from Jim's perspective he's being more attentive than he looks where he's lounging in the captain's chair. The subroutine goes as planned while he holds off inputting any more commands, thereby activating it via newly installed pathways through Gaila's stolen codes, and he munches cheerily on an apple as he swans around his bewildered fake crew, chomping loudly and obnoxiously as he glances up to the instructors above.

Third time's a charm, he thinks smugly, taking a bigger bite. ]

[ That part of the movie bored and kind of confused him. ]

Yeah, sure. [ He'll make Stiles man those. What? Stiles is the kid who makes sure his dad eats healthy. His mom's not always around enough to monitor Scott's intake. Also, he's a werewolf. Pretty sure he's good, now, on the healthy foods vs. fatty scale. ] Of course. Oh. Also.

[ A beat, as he considers and the curse rears its ugly head! ]

Uh. [ Narrowing his eyes, he tilts his head. ] Okay, I'll bite. Dare.

[affectioning]

[ It's random, right? Finally! Playing along. He knew he could count on you, Jim. He needs to think about this one. ]

Steal the shirt off Dr. McCoy's back.

[ Because the idea of someone just trying to take someone else's shirt off without an explanation is a) hilarious and b) apparently the craziest thing goody two-shoes Scott McCall can think of at this moment. Also, Kirk would totally do this for no reason, he feels like. ]

Not that I'm backing out, that's barely even a dare, but what brought this on?

[ Wow, he feels so old for not racing off to do it. ]

Today feels like a Truth or Dare day. [ Does that make sense? He shrugs. ] I don't know. [ But, it doesn't bother him for long. ] If you're not backing out...

I'll get it after he's through with work, at least I'll be doing him half a favor if he's heading in for a shower. Plus he's not here right now.

[ Welp, teenagers. Have your Truth or Dare day, he'll assume it's just a thing. ]

[affectioning]

[ Damn.

It is not a thing! Who has Truth or Dare days! With anyone? For a whole day? He deflates a bit. Moving on. ]

[ Scott, pls, Jim did Truth or Dare until he was twenty-two. ]

No problem. Decided what you're going to do yet?

[ Liar. Twenty-four! Maybe. Who knows. But, that was a game that went nowhere. Luckily, the compulsion ends if it isn't followed through. ]

Yeah, actually. Penny gave me the animal shelter. With Dr. McCoy's help I'm going to convert it. Into a clinic. Or, a vet. [ He still needs to find out what the difference is. ]

[ You find the time to play Truth or Dare in between finishing the academy a year early and still getting some, kid. ]

So, people or animals. Pick whichever one will cause you the least grief. Are you Bones' protégé?

[affectioning]

[ He already is. Or, was. They're broken up now. All he's done is brushed his boner up against her. Oops. #somethingcameup ]

Animals. They don't cause anyone grief. [ Except for rabid ones. Lethal ones. But, not ones that end up in a vet! ] I don't know. Am I? [ Can he be? ] Has he mentioned me? [ LMAO SCOTT ]

No, but that means he'll be wanting to keep you all to himself so I'm sure it's nothing you've done.

[ Hopeful, yet laidback eyebrows. That just sounds ... kind of really cool. ]

What about you? People or animals?

[ If only everyone had eyebrows as expressive as Scott's, it's a crying shame. ]

Animals? Fewer complaints.

[affectioning]

[ Jim you have the bluest eyes. Not in a position to complain. ]

Once I have it up and running, if you want a pet or something, you should come by. [ Every animal needs a home. ]

[ True, his own brows are beasts in their own right over those baby blues. ]

I'm not sure that's a good idea, I don't want to set the wrong kind of example for my crew. A motorbike's one thing, but a pet's another.

[affectioning]

How is getting a pet setting a bad example?

We shouldn't be taking on any major responsibilities while we're here. Me and my people, I mean. We've already broken a ton of rules, I'd rather not do it for the hell of it.

[affectioning]

[ That sounds like you won't be here long, Jim. Wishful thinking? ]

Last night, a girl told me she's been here for five years.

And Ginny's been here for four, it doesn't change anything. I'm a captain, Scott. If I let my people put roots down here, I wouldn't be doing right by them, and I especially shouldn't do the same when it's my duty to get them home.

[affectioning]

Are you going to help that group go on missions?

The anonymous group. There was A and then Tristero. He explained everything. Why people got sick, what they're doing to fix things - the fact that curses are back. And they said they'd be needing our help. Did you miss all of that?
