[ his day has not been a good one. actually, the last few have been... less than ideal. he's been trying to do something a little more normal and had almost no luck. perhaps it's his mind running wild; perhaps it's the lack of personal items he would normally have at his disposal. whatever the case, his days have been... extremely difficult to adjust to. so when he decides to test the system, as it were, he chooses to make his presence known by voice only for now. ]

I realize I am still very new to this City, but I have a question for any who would answer. Do any of you have personal items that you normally have in your own homes, items you no longer have with you? What do you do now, with the emptiness that comes of having lost something extremely important? I find myself... missing certain things and I'm at a loss as to how to connect to something that is no longer with me.

[ it's a vaguely-worded question and he's not sure he'll answer with complete honesty if someone asks what he's talking about, but it's a question that's bothering him now. perhaps the answer is to gather a substitute and make do with what he can here. for better or for worse. ]

[First officers never ask ensigns for advice. Even Spock--who appears wholly unimpressed by the navigator's child genius reputation--doesn't consult Chekov, although he will occasionally entertain his opinions. Chekov likes Chakotay already.]

after being stranded for the last five years several tens of thousands of lightyears away from everything they've ever known, the crew has learned to adjust and deal with each other by forming bonds in spite of rank.

I haven't had the best history of being one, but I try. Sometimes... trying is all you've got.

I can provide one. [It's a sincere offer. Chekov is constitutionally incapable of joking with superiors before he has had a chance to get to know them well.

And he might not fully believe that first officers are allowed to have a sense of humor.]

[ chakotay would challenge anyone to be lost in the delta quadrant and not develop one. and not be vulcan. that's cheating.

I'm glad you agree. That's how I like to live my life. [ even more reason to like chekov. ] I assume you live yours the same way or you wouldn't suggest it.

[Something about Chakotay's tone does encourage a certain amount of ease. He sounds approachable.]
