My people have been given the run of the City Labs via my authority, Captain James Kirk of the USS Enterprise, at the discretion of the anonymous faction that rid the City of its former captors.

That means anyone who wants to get some actual work done can report here to sign up for the Starfleet Program. Physicists, engineers, sciences, medicine if you're interested in expanding your field — all the sections are going to be geared toward improving our technology and getting us out of here. I've had a look around and for twenty-first century restrictions, it's not too bad. Let me know who you are and what you specialize in, so I can keep track of who's going to be coming and going from the facility. You don't have to be a member of Starfleet to sign up for a job, but it's not exactly light work and if you're not a fan of doing things the hard way, I wouldn't bother. We might have to try building our own equipment from scratch, for that matter.

Oh, and does anyone know where I can get a cheap motorcycle from? Thanks. Also, Stiles, I've got some free time if you do.

Six. [It's automatic, but for the first time since they've started talking, something falters in her eyes and she amends evenly,] Sorry, five.

Sorry to hear that. [ BUT YEAH, moving on for her sake. ] So you're telling me, basically, that you were the little princess with a whole bunch of slaves to push around.

[She brushes off the apology with a little shake of her head, lips pressed together and eyes flitting away for a second because this is the first time in a year she's made that slip. She's grateful he moves on with her, takes a breath at his comment, releases it with a smile.]

I'm sure they'd agree with you if they heard that but I don't think it's true at all. They didn't even let me play with them half the time. [Flying was too dangerous for little girls, they claimed.] But they're the best. Actually, if they were here right now, I expect they would've jumped down your throat for talking to me. [Grinning,] Lucky me, they're not.

Protective much? Sounds about right to me.

Which means you've either known loads of girls with protective older brothers or you've got one yourself.

[ His smile softens a touch as he glances away, then back. ]

[Shaking her head, smile growing.]

Younger siblings have a sense about them. What's he like? How much older?

Few years, he left home when I was a kid. [ And Jim loved him dearly, miserable when he was left behind to live with their horrid 'uncle' Frank. ] We haven't spoken in a long time, he had his own path to walk, but as I remember it Sam was ... headstrong. Very.

[ Jim's smile crooks. ]

I was the good kid, believe it or not.

[ Until I had enough too. ]

[She laughs, ducking her head.]

I believe it. [She reaches over to hug a pillow to her chest, resting her chin on top of it.] You must miss him. Where'd he go?

I don't know. One day he just ... [ And he shrugs. ] Couldn't blame him for long, it was understandable.

[Brows knitting a little.]

Did you try to find him?

When I was older, for a while. But Sammy was long gone by then.

[ This isn't exactly private news, given what happened aboard the Kelvin, but he doesn't have to talk about it. He chooses to, largely because Ginny slipped up on six brothers. ]

Our dad died when I was born, me and my brother lived with our mom and her boyfriend. She'd go off-planet a lot and Uncle Frank wasn't exactly a pleasant guy to be around, so when Sam had enough he walked out. It was never really our home.

[ Only a house. "What do you want, Jimmy?" "I just don't want my brother to go." "Well, nobody cares what you want, you're no one." They never had any reason being there in the first place. ]

The day Frank made him leave, I drove my dad's antique car into a quarry and got into a heap of trouble. That was the last thing that belonged to me and my dad, once Sam was gone, and I didn't want it around.

[She notes the shift in their conversation's filter but doesn't comment on it, just knows what this means. So she listens quietly, lips buried in the plush of her pillow, because family.]

Sorry. [Soft.] Being the youngest isn't all that great. Bill's eleven years older than me and he was away at school for most of my life—all of them were—and then he moved to Egypt. Charlie went to Romania after graduation, Percy... [Argued with their parents and stormed out.] Anyway, it was just goodbye after goodbye. Maybe it's not the same but I get it. [A slight smile, chin lifting a bit.] Like you said, their own paths to walk. Older brothers are kind of idiots.

[The best kinds, though.]

[ Nodding along as he listens (that can't have been easy, watching them all leave again and again) Jim folds his arms. ]

Don't tell him, but Bones took the place I always saved for Sam. Didn't even have to try.

[Her smile grows, bringing up a hand to push through her hair.]

Because Merlin forbid you get him to crack a smile? I don't know him very well, but—I think he'd be glad to hear it.

He'd just get flustered and curse about it, plus I'm pretty sure he already knows. We don't need to rub his nose in being a good person, Ginny, we're not cruel.

As long as he knows. Some people don't see it in themselves and it takes a little reminding.

[Harry bloody Potter. Then - ]

And I, Captain, am quite excellent at reminding. And flustering. But I won't say a word about that or the microwave.
