2 ♛ settling

[voice]

You know, I was going to try to wait until everything around here slowed down a little, but I'm getting the impression that that's never going to happen. Meteorites or not, I've still got to eat, and everyone at the Welcome Center has been really nice, but I need a job. I've been giving out resumes across the City, but someone told me I should advertise on the network - it's apparently really helpful for finding a job. Given how kind people was when I arrived, I'm not surprised. [ The surly Joan from her intro isn't here. She's cheerful and friendly... a lot more cheerful than she actually feels, but she really wants to give a good impression. ]

So, here it goes. I'm happy to learn if you're happy to train, and I'd be interested in any kind of opportunity, especially one where I can work closely with people.

Attached: Joan Watson 2013 Resume.doc

[ The resume goes on for another sensible half of a page, detailing other previous work experience and skills. Someone might notice holes of time in it -- there's nothing there about her previous career as a surgeon, nor the length of time she spent in medical school. Really, she's just hoping no one will ask. ]

I put my contact information on there, but you could also respond to this post if you'd like. Thanks for reading!

You're a consulting detective? That's useful!
paving: (best I'd ever had)

I guess there are always mysteries. But I guess I was thinking more of the mysteries back where I came from.

Murder mysteries, of course.

If you don't get any other bites, the Welcome Center and the Youth Center are both hiring. Or--I mean, I guess they're not hiring right this second, but they will be.

[When this jail thing is over. Penny's pretty sure it's just a curse.]

Experience isn't a big deal. I'd be more afraid that you'd get bored with it after being a detective.

Talking to the police is a great idea. I don't know if you've met Steve Rogers or not yet; he's in charge over there, and he's a nice guy. They're usually pretty short-staffed, so I bet they'd like any help they can get.

Yep, everyone here was taken from somewhere else. Things we run don't always last too long. The police have done a great job of staying together and doing what they can, considering how often people come and go.

The City has some dedicated people, I'll tell you that. Everything turned to sand when I was still pretty new here and everyone kept on working; the police and the hospital staff just did their jobs in the desert. We might be trapped, but we couldn't be stuck with a better bunch of people.

Oh, no. Most of it turned back into whatever it was pre-sand after about a week. We weren't sure it would, so that was nice.

[No one would blame Joan for going with frightening. Not everyone can be pathologically optimistic.]

Kind of. This is my second time in the City--so I'm told, I mean--and I guess I started it the first time I came here. Memories don't always come back with people once they leave.

Consulting detective and sobriety coach? It reads like you pay too much attention to details and want to smother them.

That's right. Street people seldom have money.

So that's what you do for a living. You got out of high school, kicked around college then decided this was it. Well, you can't spell smother without mother... this replaces other things. Nice.

Is that how you talk to people trying to get you a job?

It is good that you are getting used to this place, Watson-san.

Unfortunately, what work there is for a detective here...I am unsure. I wouldn't be considered one, but I have some degree of skill that would assist one, and for now I have been trying to learn more about the City itself and what we should expect given the most recent events.

I would recommend that you keep your head down in all this talk of revolution and so on, but certainly I could use help in deciphering the situation from a neutral position, if you would be interested. The City is complex, deep, and hidden...and I intend to find it what is there to know, so that we may extract ourselves from some of these poor situations and create some kind of even footing here.

There are many reasons to wait before taking sides. First, the Watch shows no signs of yielding under attack or subterfuge -- various magics have been tried against them to no avail, and their technological prowess is, at times, impressive. Second, at least I personally have not been able to discern what the rebels want -- freedom from the deities, yes, but then what? They have yielded no plans for government, no statements on how secure or open their resulting society would be, no leadership proper, so on and so forth. They are keeping information from many of us, simply encouraging riot and rebellion rather than actual planning. Third, it seems that the deities proper may not be what they seem, and if attacking them will only anger a higher power, we need to further determine what that higher power is. After all, in my world, defeating the shrine maiden will only anger her god...and then what will you do, if you didn't account for that?

I do not know yet whether I wish to fight against the City. I do not have enough information to say one way or the other. That, among other reasons, is why I want to investigate further.

If you would have me, I wish to help you with this. More minds attacking this problem will yield results more quickly than each person working alone and in parallel with the rest.

There likely are, but the City has become jaded. If we make concrete plans, something to draw in others who might help but now are not seeing any routes, perhaps that will help assemble a larger group.
