[Beside the fountain, a statue has appeared. Or so one might assume, given the slate-grey stone of its skin, the sharp glint of wire topping its head as a fall of hair. Despite the illusion of its cape and cloak that billow in the winter breeze, the shimmer of light on the longsword dangling from one clenched fist, surely it can't be alive...]
[But watch from another angle and see that the tunic it wears is in tatters, exposing a lean torso of yet more stone, the features of a chiseled face framed by darker pebbles. The first sign of true life is seen in sluggish trails of blood that flow from his mouth and chest, their slow drips rhythmic against the ground.]
[The stone man sways in silence, eyes closed, and then he pitches forward into the fountain. A sharp crack sounds as his hip strikes the base, and then the only movement are the ribbons of red that flow from his wounds and get swept into the current.]
***
[Voice, some time later]
[A distinctly uncomfortable clearing of his throat, before a low, smoky voice addresses whoever might be listening. He is far from used to communicating through such means, but it might prove advantageous to not require face to face contact.]
How might a new... resident [or whatever a stranger calls himself] go about finding living accommodations and employment? I haven't seen much in the way of advertisement postings. [Wanted posters being, of course, his usual method of job seeking.]
((OOC: So sorry this took so long, I've been (really) sick! Any City dweller that can sense supernatural presence might be slightly pinged by him, but they probably won't be able to identify what exactly he is. For more specific info, feel free to ask!))

The Welcome Center has plenty of beds if you need a place to stay. Some jobs, too. Did you just get here?
voice; /snickers
There's a welcome center? [That combined with her complete lack of surprise...] I take it new arrivals are a somewhat regular occurrence.

Re: voice;
This place is called the City. Supposedly it's run by beings called deities, but nobody's really sure. The most important thing to know is every few days people are randomly cursed. Sometimes it's not so bad, but other times they can be really, really cruel. You need to be careful.
Re: voice;
Is there any way to avoid those curses? [He'd had his fill of curses in his life, thanks.]
voice;
Not that anyone has discovered. You're not necessarily hit with every curse. Some people can go for weeks without being cursed; other people are cursed every few days.
voice;
You seem relatively calm about all this. [Which he respects, actually. Better than the flailing drama and explosions he's used to.]
voice;
My name's Nyota. Welcome to the City. [Mr. Sexy Voice. Let's concentrate on the good stuff, here.]
voice;
Zelgadis. [Shortened nicknames abound, but those were never at his behest.]
voice;
So, what do you do? What kind of job would you be looking for?
voice;
I've worked as a bodyguard when I needed money [or access to secret libraries]. But there's a lot I could do if I had to. [Versatile magic is a useful thing.]
voice;
voice;
I'm a sorcerer. My type of magic is useful for lots of things. [He's a bit worried that may not be true here, but he's nothing if not accustomed to adapting.] I suppose it depends on what needs doing. Any recommendations?
voice;
voice;
I might do that. And I appreciate the reference. [At least he'll know a name to look for -- or look out for.] And what is it you do?
voice;
voice;
Are there libraries here?
voice;
I specialize in living languages, but honestly, as long as you're familiar with the root language, they're all pretty easy to figure out.
[You can't see it, of course, but she's resting her chin on her hand as she thinks about his question.]
There's the big library, I don't remember where it is exactly. [Strangely enough, she doesn't go often.] But it can be hard to find what you want there. The shelves have a mind of their own. A man named Aziraphale runs a bookstore downtown, and I've heard the selection there is good.
voice;
I'll have to make a point to visit. It can't be any worse than dodging dungeon traps in search of some "secret scroll" that may or may not actually exist anymore.
Re: voice;
[Oh god, is she flirting? Badly? She can't. No. You can't wait for Spock forever. Except she's not waiting for him.
She hates this. How complicated everything has gotten since those ghouls invaded. She had cared about Spock, maybe even loved him, but now that feeling has been polluted with so many others — grief for his people, anger that he isn't here, guilt at killing the ghoul with his face.
Nyota Uhura, you are not in a good place for flirting with strangers. Especially with dumb lines like that.]
Sounds like you live an exciting life.
[It doesn't count as flirting if it's true, does it?]
voice;
[The mention of an "exciting life" brings on a dry chuckle.] You could say that. Sometimes I could do with a little less excitement. [Like battling Dark Lords. He could easily go the rest of his life without more of that.]
voice;
voice;
Even so, it's worth my time to learn something useful. You never know when things will come in handy. [Or if he'll be able to find a cure while he's here. Even if it would be undone when he escapes this mess, it's still worthwhile.]
