[Today, Miss Anna is accompanied by a pair of kittens, one orange and one grey. Their names are, respectively, Biscuit and Danish. She has them out in the park with her, letting them chase after leaves and tussle with one another. All in all, she seems quite calm and content today.]

[Uhura is out for a walk, and thinking that she really needs to go out clothes shopping. Skirts as short as her uniform are not common here.

She can't remember how long it's been since she's been planetside. Or since she's seen so much animal life. When she catches sight of Anna and her kittens, she can't help smiling.]

Your cats are precious!

[Anna is not always the most confident with strangers, but she can do a good job of hiding it, looking up at the woman with a somewhat limp but ultimately friendly expression.]

Thank you, they make for good company.

[Uhura recognizes the signs of shyness and wants to put the young woman at her ease.]

Do you mind if I pet them?

I don't mind at all.

[She does sit back a little, however, leaving space between herself and Uhura.]

And I'm certain they won't.

[Anna points to each of the cats in turn, orange to grey.]

This is Biscuit, and this is Danish.

[Uhura kneels down, gracefully tucking her legs behind her before reaching out to scratch Biscuit behind the ears.]

It's nice to meet you two. My name's Uhura.

Hello, mademoiselle.

[Politeness is an armor for Anna, keeps her grounded where she would otherwise be growing increasingly paranoid.]

My name is Anna Assaoui.

[Uhura doesn't often have chances to practice her French, but she's always loved the way it rolls off her tongue, and she can't resist switching to French when say it's a pleasure to meet her and asking if she's from France.]

C'est un plaisir de vous rencontrer, Anna. Êtes-vous de la France?

[Oh. Watch Anna's face light up.]

Je suis, toute ma vie. Et toi?

Non, je suis du Mozambique. Mais je me suis rendu à Paris il ya quelques années. C'est une belle ville.

Il a été un temps très long depuis que je suis. J'aurais aimé avoir vu le Mozambique.

[All the past tense.]

Je l'espère. Depuis combien de temps êtes-vous ici?

Huit mois maintenant, je pense? C'est difficile à dire.

Comment peuvent-ils mesurer le temps ici?

[Her smile is faint, ironic.]

Du mieux qu'ils peuvent. Mais ... le temps n'a pas d'importance tant pour moi.

[It's not really a story she wants to tell, just a concession. She turns her attention down to the kittens, picking up another leaf to twirl in front of them and they give chase, tumbling over one another.]

[Uhura notices the shift in mood. She's not sure what it means, but she doesn't know this girl well enough to press the issue.]

Je suis juste curieux combien d'heures sont en un jour, jours par an, des choses comme ça.

[It's pretty much impossible to calculate a proper stardate when you can't even tell what universe you're in.]

Je pense que nous essayons de garder les 24 heures. Un an ... Je ne saurais dire? Nous avons compté les mois, car je suis habitué, mais qui sait vraiment.

[She'd read about places that torture prisoners by depriving them of the ability to track time. That doesn't seem to be what's happening here, but it's still unsettling to contemplate.]

[Anna would tell her that this is a very friendly dungeon, if it is one indeed.]

Her watch beeps, and she sighs.]
