Good afternoon, City.

I've become aware that there are a number of individuals present who have a certain interest in science and engineering. I happen to have a personal project upon which I am about to embark, and I thought that it might hold some interest for those who are so inclined.

I was fortunate enough, upon entering the City, to arrive in an experimental vehicle of mine. Less fortunately, it was badly damaged by a bolt of lightning immediately prior to my arrival and subsequently by its unanticipated arrival - the impact, specifically. The vast majority of its functionality has since been restored - though, I suspect due to the controlled and likely artificial nature of our present dimension, it no longer serves its intended purpose.

In my own reality, it had been modified to fly as well. To be perfectly candid, after the recent business with flight here, it seems as if having that capability at hand would hardly be ill-advised. I have not yet restored this functionality and, as the technology behind it is beyond the overall state of advancement in the City, I thought it may be of interest to those here. The circuitry controlling the car's ability to fly has been essentially destroyed, so my current intention is to remove, analyze, and rebuild it.

So! If there are others who would share an interest in reverse-engineering and replicating this technology, I would certainly welcome collaboration. Undoubtedly, this task would be accomplished much more quickly with the gifted assistance of those in the City.

You underestimate the sophistication of your technology. I only wonder what you would have been able to do, given the resources available in my time.

Well, the flying circuits are hardly anything I can take credit for, truthfully. The technology is widely available in the early twenty-first century, in my reality. It was merely added to the vehicle.

I'm afraid I don't have such specifics yet; presently, I'm in the process of attempting to secure a larger space in which to work. While I do have a workshop here, I'm afraid that for such a large disassembly and reassembly with multiple individuals involved, it would be far too cramped a space in which to work effectively.

What was the original purpose of the automobile besides flight?

[He pauses a bit, but... well, they're in a dimensional nexus that has plucked them out of their realities and he's far from the only time traveler here. It's really not much of a secret anymore.]

Well, I'm a scientist, primarily. I had originally designed the vehicle for experimental purposes, in temporal physics. Here, however, attempts to activate that function have resulted in being displaced into an alternate version of the City. A related and semi-connected but separate dimension, it seems.

Precisely! The structure and layout of this alternate City resembles this one perfectly, but there are drastic environmental differences - a dense fog, and a lack of any apparent life.

Do you have any idea why there's a second city?

Which is precisely why I have every intention of investigating this alternate City as thoroughly as possible.

Most any research and exploration does come with a certain degree of risk. However, the vehicle has - thus far - provided transport to and from this alternate City with some reliability. There also appear to be other means by which it can be accessed; I know of at least one individual who was able to gain access using an entirely different device.

Do I? Well, perhaps we've met at some other point in time. Yours doesn't sound familiar, but that hardly rules out our having met at some point I have not yet experienced. Or, perhaps this is a case of a close duplicate - a seeming twin, from another reality. There have been more than a few instances of those in the City.

[But because not everything is necessarily that complex...]

Of course, I suppose it's also possible my voice is similar to someone else's entirely.

Popular fictional trends aside, I don't believe that a duplicate would necessarily be evil in nature.
