I must say, though it was unexpected, the weekend's storm doesn't seem nearly impossible. With the proper technology, control over the weather is perfectly attainable - hardly a thing of magic, and far more easily explicable than many of these so-called curses in the City.

Much of what we dismiss as impossible, magical, or beyond our ability is merely what hasn't been defined or quantified yet. A good piece of science fiction, for example, always has its basis in fact and works to expand upon the theoretically possible. More than a few works have influenced the creation of real-life technology, proving that the realm of possibility and the limits of human advancement are consistently far broader than most generally consider them to be.

Though, of course, I'm certain a storm of that magnitude would net the weather service a good many complaints - certainly if it were in July.

Not that I'd disagree with any of it, of course. The continuing expansion of human potential, knowledge and accomplishment is always a fascinating and inspiring thing to behold.

I love time travel! I've seen all the movies. Terminator, The Time Machine, 12 Monkeys, Time Changer, Milenniums...

Fiction certainly can be the basis for incredible inspiration.

I have done some experimentation in the field; to be honest, given the nature of our current situation, time travel alone seems to have lost some novelty. Certainly when we've been brought here from across vastly different points in space and time.

Oh, that's very much encapsulated in the concept of space and time. Alternate realities are generally believed, and can most certainly be created by, different decisions and actions taken at crucial points in time. With each individual making countless potentially reality-altering choices in any given moment, there are believed to be innumerable realities that bear very little resemblance to one another ultimately, but could possibly be traced to crucial moments which led to their deviance, provided enough information were available.

Do you think it's possible for a choice to be made in one reality that leads to the events of that reality becoming a work of fiction in a related reality?

I hadn't given that consideration. I'm not certain how, exactly, such a phenomenon would occur, but... if there were some sort of... dimensional flux, perhaps, that granted awareness of alternate realities--

[And his eyes narrow, his gaze averts from the device, and he falls quiet for a moment before shaking his head.]

Any possible explanation would be purely speculative, and impossible to test...

Well, we can hardly access multiple realities simultaneously to do a study of what constitutes reality as opposed to fiction in each, and from within realities, even one such as the City, it's not possible to identify the way in which specific dimensions are connected to one another. Grasping such a concept would involve a scope that would extend far beyond a full lifetime of study. Already, there have been a multitude of minds that have dedicated their lives to this mystery; we may very well understand it some day, but it may be at great risk. I have gradually come to believe that unraveling certain aspects of the nature of reality, gaining the ability to manipulate space and time... these actions can have consequences that cannot always be foreseen.
