[ There’s a man in full fire-fighter gear, oxygen mask and all, standing in the fountain dripping wet. ] What the hell?

[ A beat, another, then he’s visibly shaking himself out of it and stepping out of the fountain, taking off helmet and mask and stuffing them under one arm, reaching out to grab a passerby with the other. ] Hey, you. Mind explaining what the hell’s going on here? ‘cause this ain’t Chicago.

[Hey there, sir. You don't just grab people like that.]

Huh? Oh, no--not Chicago. This is the City.

[ Severide does; maybe not usually but you'll have to excuse him. The circumstances are a little unusual. Or at least from his side they are. How is he supposed to know that it is not unusual at all to arrive in the City via the fountain? ]

The City. [ What are you talking about. ]

[Okay, point. The fountain isn't that much fun, anyway.]

It's a lame name, I know, but that's what it's called. [Now that she's over her initial surprise, Penny slips into welcome-to-the-City mode.] Do you want a towel? Dry clothes?

A place called the City. [ Are you kidding him. ] I was in Chicago in front of a burning house a minute ago. Where did that go?

[ Did he somehow hit his head; is this a hallucination? ] Gear caught most of the water.

Yep. Oh, but don't worry about Chicago or the fire! Time stops for you when you're here. I mean, unless you're dead, then--but you're not, so that's not a thing.

[She nods to acknowledge his apparent lack of dry-clothes-needing and holds out a hand.] I'm Penny. Welcome to a place where a bunch of universes meet up and things get weird.

[ That is one hell of a lot to spring on a guy just like that. Is he honestly meant to believe that. ]

You're kidding, right? [ But he still pulls off one (wet) glove and shakes her hand. ] Severide.

[See, this is why Penny runs the Welcome Center and leaves the actual welcoming to other people. Not that she can't be welcoming, but she's really bad at the explaining.]

Sometimes I wish I was. It's nice to meet you, Severide.

[ He'll accept it for the time being, if only because the alternative is — what? Running around trying to find Chicago? He's obviously not there. Testing himself for recent head trauma? He doesn't even have a headache, and only some medical training and if this is a hallucination, then asking a doctor is right out as well because any doctor would be a hallucination as well. ]

And you. [ At least his welcoming committee of one is cute? ]

[The options are fairly limited.]

Can I get you anything? No--wait. [She pulls out her network device.] I'll send a City guide to you, okay? It's not the most thorough, but it's pretty straight to the point.

[Have another redhead, Severide. Ginny raises an eyebrow at the camera.]

What're you wearing?

[ Which is the only reason he's relatively docile about this. ]

A guide. That'll be useful. [ And he'll look at that in a moment. Until then: ] Don't suppose you know where I could get a drink? [ He's going to need one, really. ]

Ginny, the guy just got here. Give him five minutes before going in with the booty calls.

[ ... how do you not know that this is fire-fighting gear? ]

My gear. [ Isn't that obvious? ]

I beg your pardon.

[Except she's laughing, so this is kind of terrible.]

It's an honest question. Why, jealous?

Well, yeah, I can see that. Just never seen anything like it before is all. Reckon it's another one of those 'different worlds' thing.

I can dig out a hazmat suit if that's the gear you're into.

[ Different worlds? He hasn't gotten that far yet, what are you talking about? ]

You've never seen a fire fighter before?

[A what?]

It's Quidditch gear I fancy, thanks very much. All that leather, you know. And the trousers do great things for arses.

[Now that he's said it, it clicks. They briefly touched on this in Muggle Studies, another one of those ways Muggles get on without magic in times of emergency.]
