[For anyone going to Saya's class today will see this sitting in the shop, hood up, waiting to be messed with]

Every year I outline very clearly the requirements to pass my class, and every year we come to this point where some people inevitably miss those requirements. For whatever reason, the schoolboard believes in second chances, and so here it is.

The final is worth 10% of your grade you've done all the work. If your grade is currently at a 50% or lower, it will be worth 60% of your grade.

In the shop is a Spyder 918, generously lent to the shop program by an anonymous donor. The review will encompass hybridization, which I guarantee you, will be on the advanced autoshop test. For the beginning and intermediate classes, if you show up to any extra review session, I can guarantee you that I will cover what will be on your final.

But no matter your level, you ought to come in. The Spyder is only here for a day. Consider it a gift from me to you for sitting through an entire year with me.

Otherwise, I'll see you at the dance. I'm a chaperone.

Mercy didn't really need the review, but there was no way she was passing up the chance to see and maybe get her hands on a Spyder 918. She came in, looking around for it and nodded to her teacher. "Hey, Ms. Wallace."

[Saya glances up from helping a beginning student figure out a basic tune up on a clunker used to teach]

Hello, Mercy. Couldn't resist?

"A Spyder 918? Are you kidding?" Mercy grinned at her. "I'd consider giving up summer vacation for that!"

[Saya just smiles slightly and moves to where it's sitting, waiting.]

You hardly have to do that. Have you considered a work-placement with a quality mechanic shop?

[Mercy followed her, eyes scanning over every inch of the car.]

Thought about it, but I wouldn't even know where to apply. And some of the people I did talk to didn't think a girl could do the work.

I have a list of places that wouldn't mind your help.

Really? Oh man, that would be wonderful! I'd be really grateful, Ms. Wallace.

As long as you tell me where you went that said a girl couldn't do the work was.

I talked to Timmons downtown and then this friend I know from where I used to live asked the guy there and, well, yeah.

Stupid, right? I mean what do certain anatomical parts - or lack thereof -have to do with my ability to fix cars?

I'll go talk to them.

[Mercy couldn't help but laugh.]

I pity them.

[She shrugs]

I hope some day I learn how to do that right.

Right now you're better off fighting for whatever cause you like more.

Sometimes my donor goes for a little bit too much artistic license. I'm just glad he didn't get flames painted on the sides.

Now there's a final. [Peering closer at the car now.] Getting all that shit scraped off. Or painted over, whatever.

Mr. Leon, you're giving me awful ideas your classmates won't appreciate.

[Detention with Ms. Wallace - fixing ugly cars.]

You can touch her, if you like.

Yeah, well, that's their problem.

[Now that he's been offered, he isn't going to waste any time before running a hand over that sleek finish. Not that he won't do it with reverence, of course; the good old American muscle car will be his first and greatest love, but that's no reason to disrespect a fucking Porsche, much less a fucking Spyder.]
