Question for you, City: what's the most expensive gift you've bought while in the City, and did anything ever literally cost you an arm and a leg? Was it worth it?

What I'm trying to say is happy last-minute desperate christmas shopping.

[Throughout the day Mae can be found in several places:

CITY LIBRARY;

A librarian's job is never over? Apparently there's a rumour about a weed problem that might have reached all the way into the Library. She'll be on the lookout, but mostly trying to make sure no-one ends up doing anything lewd in her place of work. While hopefully (?) not doing anything more lewd herself.

CITY SHOPS;

Even Mae Crawfords need to shop for Christmas, great gifts don't just happen. Find her anywhere on the streets, carrying a variating amount of shopping bags. She has a lot of friends. But there's always time for a short conversation! No way is mistletoe going to ruin her plans today, she has beat this curse before. (She doesn't mind dispensing with a few seasonal kisses. It's been a while since her last one. Maybe it'll be her present to herself.)

[Ginny is running through the shops as she always seems to on days like this. She's already run home and dropped off some things so her hands are more free and she's already run into people so she knows what today is. But she's not about to hide in her flat from it. There's shopping to be done! Christmas in a week! CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP.

And she spots a shock of pink hair turning the corner and she yells,]

Oi! Crawford!

[The irony of a witch going home to drop things off when Mae would usually suggest just making them smaller and carrying them in a pocket. But maybe she's that strategic when lazy, who knows. It's not the first mistletoee of the day, but Mae feels like she should make a warning.]

Fair warning, Weasley, my lips are irresistible today.

[She did make things smaller, she does it every year. But she got tired of dropping them all over the slush and ice when people grabbed her or she grabbed onto people and it's all very exhausting, okay. Ginny stops a few feet from Mae with an amused grin, hands in her pockets and shrugging.]

What, and mine aren't? Are we surprised? We're gorgeous. And have splendid luck with the mistletoe, probably.

[Well, thank god all her purchases are in bags and wrapped up already, because one of those is definitely Ginny's and she wants it to be a surprise until it's actually time to give it to her. But that does make her smile.]

About the only time we do have luck, or get lucky, if memory serves.

[Her smile softens a little and it's barely noticeable but she can't help but wonder if she's going to run into a certain someone today because wouldn't it be creepy if she hunted him down??? NO. RIGHT? Whatever. Ginny just shrugs again then laughs, taking the risk to close the distance between them so they're not shouting intimate details of their lives across the City.]

No, I reckon that applies to the handsy blokes who think this is their best shot at getting a leg over.

[There are definitely people she would like to not run into today, if possible, because she has definitely been thinking about kissing them before and it wouldn't be fair to herself if she got to kiss them again only because of mistletoe. But that doesn't mean she won't be doing her planned chores today as though the mistletoe doesn't actually bother her.]

You want to grab a coffee? [Because they're friends, and they can hang out, right?]

[Her laughter hitches into a brighter sound.]

Yeah, alright. You chatting me up, Crawford?

If I wanted to char you up, I'd throw a blanket around your shoulders. [She gives her a wink that is very daring and born from the comfort that their friendship comes with, slinking her arm through Ginny's.]

But every shopping expedition deserves a few breaks, and if we're going to be potentially assaulted by magic mistletoe, I'd rather it be somewhere comfortable.

[She rolls her eyes and twines her arm with hers and off they march towards the nearest coffee shop.]

True enough. Though I don't know what I did to give you the impression that I can be placated with a blanket and some tea.

It's the only time you sit close enough to snuggle. [She nudges her elbow against Ginny's side gently.]

It's cold, I'll sit close to anyone to snuggle.

[She smirks, elbowing her back.]

Busy day?

I thought I was special. [She laughs, the gesture coming easily and naturally, and that's good, right? She's getting better at moving on with every friend that leaves. As long as she doesn't fall in love in the City, she's going to be safe.

But what's a little kissing...] It hasn't really been different from any other day, minus the delays for kissing.

[By lunchtime the mistletoe has strung itself between the streetlights and there are lines of shoppers performing some kind of accidental makeout conga along the trails. Chase has already written off shopping. He's out in front of the hospital with a stepladder, taking down some of the plants that have started crawling up the brickwork.]

Depends on how long you carry on, too.

[She gestures to the busily snogging couple in front of them, conveniently blocking the door to the coffee shop. Ginny stops and waits with a patient exhale, gaze flitting up to the sky.]

Reckon we'll get some snow or another summer on Christmas?

Anything longer than three seconds is foreplay for you, or what? [Live a little, Ginny. What's a bit of friendly snogging, anyway?

But for now, there's no chance of them getting attacked by any mistltoe as long as they're in the open air and waiting in line to get coffee.] I don't really care for the weather as long as we don't get the actual ghosts of Christmases past or something.

[She should stay away. She should stay the hell away, because what was that? The possibility of kissing Chase again? Nope, she's not going to go there; they're friends, and that's great, and she won't ruin it by letting herself linger on feelings that will never see any sort of satisfaction because he's got a girlfriend who would give Mae a run for her money and probably her life. While wearing heels. So she should take her own advice to Penny, and let that part go.

Only it's not the season to make good life choices. All she sees when she spots him at the hospital entrance is the fact that his ladder is shaking and looking unstable. The need to protect and rescue takes over the need for good life choices, and she's holding it stead before she can think I should stay away. So. Anyway.]

My dear Miss Crawford, just because you're my friend doesn't mean you get all the details.

[She grins and let's not talk about just how long it's been, shall we, for either of them because maybe today's curse really is the closest thing to foreplay. SIGH. Ginny chuckles, shakes her head.]

We've been fairly lucky the past few Christmases, though. I don't think we've had an awful curse on the day. Hopefully my saying that hasn't jinxed us.

[She nearly makes him fall off the ladder when her voice comes out of nowhere, so thank goodness for the steadying hands. He can't look down through the armful of foliage, so he calls]

Want me to bend over a little more? Maybe you'll get a look up my skirt.

[In her defense, she'd try to catch him but probably fail. She's sturdy but not strong, if you know what I mean. But the easy comment makes up for the stumble and she glides right through the following one.]

A lady's supposed to save a little mystery for the boudoir.

[ Stiles had actually meant to bring round the grocery bag earlier. It's full of nice things because Mae's a good friend and if you can't bring your bro a bag of candy canes and Christmas revelry in thanks for not mocking them missing their daddy than what can you do? But he's been trying to dodge mistletoe and little old ladies all afternoon.

It's so close to midnight he thinks he should be safe so he shifts the weight of the bag and knocks. ] Mavis, c'mon. It's cold out here.

I've been on the receiving end of too much information from Stiles, I can't say that either extreme is preferable. [She'll leave you to your own definition of foreplay, Ginny.]

If it's not you, it'll be me.

[She's at work: she's gotten rather used to Mae coming in every now and again, to see Stiles. So she doesn't think anything of it when Mae comes in today.]

I sent him on an errand, he'll be back soon.

[She's armed with a bag full of tinsel and other gaudy Christmas decorations meant not for her apartment but someone else entirely, and when she goes in search of her partner in crime, of course she ends up finding he's not there. And of course Saya is, why wouldn't she be when it's her place to begin with?]

Oh, well - I guess I'll just text him then...

You can set your things down on the table.

[She nods over to a worktable nearby her, and is about to head back to work when some of the tinsel catches her eye.]

What are you doing?

[Well, she wouldn't mind a break, although the tinsel itself isn't heavy, per se...But it's probably not a very good idea to linger. Has she done things that have been good ideas today, though? No. No she has not.]

A little Christmas decoration. [Christmas pranking. There's a lonely sour werewolf out there who should be given some warmth, and maybe Mae is more interested in the idea now that she knows in some world (maybe all worlds) Santa is real.

Anyway. Christmas is the universal holiday for cheer and warmth, right?] All very innocent.
