I have in my possession something you'll find very interesting, considering your enmity towards its source.

It's written in code. Perhaps you could crack it?

[And so he is, since there is a very large black dog sitting at his feet. They're in the shadow of the fountain, the two of them, the big black dog and the guy (boy? man?) in his rough, black clothes.

Just waiting. Just sitting on a bench and waiting.]

[A big black dog? My. Well, he was already going to be armed in the first place, so the decision to take both his pistols was one had already made. He can't die, really, but throwing himself into dangerous situations needlessly is hardly appealing.

Naoi won't leave him waiting for too long; along comes the schoolboy, with a folder of papers tucked under his arm, looking patently trustworthy.

He stops a safe distance away from the bench, eyeing the dog. He doesn't look frightened or wary, but he will not step any closer unless he's told to do so.]

[Unless he misses his guess...that's likely who he's waiting for. Okay. That works.]

Hey.

[The man in black and the black dog look at one another briefly...]

Don't worry about Blackdog. He doesn't bite. He won't shut up sometimes, but he doesn't bite. Come on.

[And the dog...grins?]

[Naoi acknowledges him with a brief nod. Sparing one last glance at the dog— the grinning dog&mdash: he steps forward, deftly opening hte folder and extracting the first paper to offer the older man.] From the Deity Office.

[(So he says, but these are actually copies. The originals are stashed in his apartment.)

He says it with a proud smile, but his arm trembles as he reaches to give it to him. Make of that what you will. That uniform looks too warm for the weather, so the shaking's likely unrelated.]

[He takes the paper, and he looks at it...then back at his Source of Information. His smile fades, his face turns grave, and then his face turns serious.]

Seriously? From the office?

[He's not...doubting so much as he's...sort of having a hard time believing it. There's a difference there.]

... yes, do I look like I can make heads or tails of this code, let alone write it? [Very defensive. He frowns, but the questioning makes him balk. His expression might be impassive, but even his knees are starting to knock.]

It's their work!

[The source is the Deity Office, there's no denying that, but if he's questioning whether it came straight from there to his hands, well...]

Hey, look, no need to worry. I believe you. I'm just...I dunno...surprised, I guess.

[A small smile.]

We can take it from here. If we're lucky, this is stuff about how some stuff in the City actually works. If we're not...maybe it's a list of office supplies they needed. But, hey, every little bit helps, right?

[At that, he regains his composure, lifting his head proudly.] You're welcome!

[Because he might just die of shame if it turns out to be a shopping list. (Well, not that he can die.)

He'll step back, not turning away yet, waving a little at the big dog.]

[Yeah, okay, he wasn't expecting that at all. Naoi's startled by the talking dog and promptly turns away in mute shock, nearly tripping as he leaves in a hurry.]
