[Uhura sits behind her desk at the Youth Center and smiles at the camera. She doesn't normally work on Sundays, but she's been in the Youth Center this entire weekend, getting herself ready to officially start as Youth Center director on Monday.]

Hello everyone. My name is Nyota Uhura, and I'll be taking over for Penny as director of the Youth Center. Unfortunately, this means I will no longer be running any language or history classes at the Welcome Center, but you can still arrange for language tutoring by appointment.

You can find me at my office Monday through Friday at any time between 9 AM and 5:30 PM. [She actually works 8:30 to 6, but she wants to build in at least some time for herself to make sure things run smoothly.]

Please stop by at any time. I want to make sure that the Youth Center is filling the needs of our community.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to meeting all of you.

[Instead of replying over the network, Chekov heads over to the Youth Center. It's a nice day (if a little too warm), and remarkably quiet (perhaps, in part, because he's avoiding Korra as Uhura requested. For now); it would be a shame to stay indoors.]

Is this a promotion, or a demotion?

[Uhura looks up from the paperwork she's reorganizing in the filing cabinets. She smiles at the sight of Chekov.]

A promotion, thank you very much. And helping out a friend.

I thought as much. [As if Uhura would do anything to get demoted. Well, aside from the bar fight, but that worked itself out.

Chekov perches on the desk and inspects the lobby. It hasn't changed at all since Tessa left.]

That's very generous of you. I had no idea that you liked children enough to be around them every day of the week.

[Uhura shrugs.]

It's not my dream job, but it's nice, having a new challenge. [She sighs a little wistfully, and makes sure nobody's around before admitting] Despite the curses and the weirdness, it gets...pretty boring here.

Boredom is a considerable challenge. Is there anything I might do to alleviate your boredom?

Other than figure out a way home? [She regrets saying that as soon as the words leave her mouth.] I think running this place will keep me plenty occupied.

Other than that, yes. [Getting back there is something he cannot do--rather frustrating, considering how much time he has spent on working on the problem in one way or another both at work and independently.] Is there that much to do?

Well, it's always an adjustment, settling into a new position. Especially one I've never done before. And I'm hoping that once I get everything together, I can expand the operation. You know, do more in the City.

What more is there to do? I can help.

[Uhura gives him a glare that is two-thirds teasing.]

You can help by letting me do it. I don't need you to do anything, Pavel. I'm the opposite of overwhelmed. I need something that will keep me busy.

[He hops off of the desk with a put-upon (and exaggerated) sigh.]

Fine, fine, I will leave you to it. [And, more thoughtfully:] Did you imagine you would do this kind of work? When we were home, or when you were at the academy?

Never. [She can hardly believe she's doing it now, but there's very little room in this world for her particular talents. You take what you can get.]

[He thought as much. There's not much of a demand for navigational and engineering prodigies, either, what with the lack of space exploration and warp core technology.]

Nyota, do you ever experience homesickness? Or timesickness, maybe...

Every day. [She rests her chin on her hand and looks at Pavel.] You too?

Yes, me too. If I knew how to leave, I think I would. [Leave, that is. He's quick to add:] I would invite you to come with me, of course.

I certainly hope you wouldn't leave me behind.

[Jem taps on her office down, before strolling into her office. He inclines his head in greeting. His silver eyes are warm and welcoming.]

Congratulations on your new position.

[He holds his hand out to shake hers.]

My name is Jem.

[Uhura's just getting ready to pack up and go home when Jem comes in. She puts down her purse and smiles as she takes his hand.]

Thank you. It's so good to meet you. Penny had mentioned you help out around the Center, but I haven't had a chance to talk to you yet. Do you have a few minutes to chat?

I do, I have not made any immediate plans for the rest of the day.

[Jem shakes her hand briefly before resting his hand back down on the jade topped cane.]

I offered to help Penny out with the security of the children here. Some of these cruses are less than friendly.

Hey, you work with Penny, she's nice.

Lots of stuff in the City makes you have to read it to get around. But, ah, I can't read. So all these signs really don't mean anything to me.

Not that I rally like having to sit down and study stuff, but I might want to buy some stuff, and it's all written down what it is and how much it is.

She's one of the nicest people I know. And I can definitely help you with your Standard literacy. Why don't you stop by my office tomorrow afternoon and we'll go over what you need and come up with a schedule.

Sure! Youth center, okay, my map should tell me where that is. Chekhov set me up with a voice-to-device thing so I can talk to this instead of type.

You know Pavel?

Yeah, I showed him my fusion power and talked to him a lot. He hasn't shown up on my device lately, so I hope he's okay.

I'm Utsuho. Should I just call you Nyota? Chekhov seems to like his last name, so it gets confusing.

Where we come from, it's customary to refer to other people by their last names. [It's a military thing.] But you can call me Nyota.

He's doing fine. He's just been very busy.

Oh okay, that happens in Gensokyo a lot. If you want to call me by my last name, it's Reiuji. We do that for more formal conversations, but people here don't seem to much. And no one here uses the endings to names.

Uhura, okay.

It's nice to meet you, Reiuji. Stop by any time tomorrow afternoon to discuss tutoring.

Is Penny okay?

[ Because he'll fight anyone who hurts her. His concern is maybe overriding the fact that Uhura is taking over the YC and she's hot. ]

Penny's fine. But she needed more time to focus on running the Welcome Center.

[Uhura smiles reassuringly.]

Are you Stiles? Penny mentioned you help out here.

Oh. Okay that's cool I was just worried she got eaten or something. [ Because living in the City that's totally an option. ]

Yep. So if you need me just yell. I'm sort've not living there at the moment but Penny lets me keep my room in case I need it.

Nope, she is safe and sound.

And actually, it'd be great if you could stop by sometime. I've been working at the Welcome Center, so I'm still trying to get a sense of how this place has been run. It would be great if I could get your insights.

Sure. [ Because who would pass up helping someone from Star Fleet? ]

When do you need me?

Whenever's convenient for you. I'll be in my office.

Sure, I'll uh - if I don't get down today, tomorrow?
